Surviving 75% Burns: Remington’s Story After a Devastating Explosion
Featuring Remington Weckbacher
About This Episode
In Episode 16 of All About Burns, Corey Halstead sits down with burn survivor Remington Weckbacher for a deeply personal conversation about survival, recovery, grief, and rebuilding life after a catastrophic burn injury.
In August 2025, Remington was working at an orphan-well site in Ohio when an explosion changed his life in an instant. He was thrown approximately 15 feet and suffered burns over roughly 70–75% of his body. After being transported for emergency care, Remington was eventually flown to The Ohio State University Medical Center, where he underwent surgery after surgery and remained unconscious for approximately two and a half months.
Two of Remington’s coworkers who were severely burned in the explosion did not survive. Remington speaks openly about the grief and survivor’s guilt that followed and how, over time, he began to see his survival differently—not simply as something he had endured, but as an opportunity to help others.
Corey and Remington discuss the parts of burn recovery that people rarely see: painful dressing changes, repeated surgeries, skin grafting, muscle loss, learning to walk again, rebuilding independence, seeing a changed reflection in the mirror, PTSD and flashbacks, and eventually transitioning from the safety of the hospital back home.
Remington also shares the important role his wife and family have played throughout his recovery. His wife became one of his greatest supporters and helped care for him after he returned home, illustrating how a severe burn injury can affect not only the survivor, but an entire family.
The conversation also explores life with visible scars, reactions from strangers, temperature regulation after extensive burns, mental health, patience during recovery, and learning not to allow physical limitations to define who you are.
Today, Remington is looking toward the future with a new sense of purpose. After once being someone who kept largely to himself, he now wants to share his experience and help other burn survivors and people recovering from traumatic injuries.

A Message From Remington’s Story
One of the most powerful moments in the conversation comes when Remington reflects on changing the way he views what happened to him:
“What if I wasn’t held down by the burn? What if I was uplifted by the burn?”
And when asked what he would say to someone newly injured and lying in a hospital bed wondering what their future will look like, Remington offers a message of hope:
“Keep your chin up. It’s going to get better.”
Burn recovery isn’t simply about wounds closing. It can mean rebuilding independence, relationships, confidence, identity, and sometimes discovering an entirely new sense of purpose.
Your story isn’t finished.
